What Is A Brake?

A brake is a pedal that stops a vehicle when it is pushed down. This automobile part is very important for it helps the driver maintain his driving speed and maneuver his car properly. Brakes transmit the force coming from your leg, down to the wheels. When you step on the brake pedal, your vehicle transmits the force through a fluid. There are two ways of transmitting it. One is through mechanical advantage. The other is by hydraulic force multiplication.

With friction, the brakes transfer the force to the road, causing the vehicle to stop suddenly. One common type of brake is the drum brake. Most of the cars being manufactured today have drum brakes on the rear wheels and disc brakes on the front. Drum brakes are cheaper than other brake types and they efficiently incorporate an emergency brake mechanism. Some cars also have an adjuster brake which is applied during an emergency brake.

Similar to other safety components in the car, brakes must be checked regularly in order to prevent accidents on the road. If you have not used your car for a long time, make sure that you check the brakes first before using it.
